In his national broadcast on Sunday 26 November 2023, President Julius Maada Bio stated that most of the leaders of an attack on a military barracks in the capital Freetown earlier on Sunday had been arrested.

The attack came as Sierra Leone is still recovering from a 1991-2002 civil war in which more than 50,000 were killed.

What you should Know

The government had imposed a nationwide dusk to dawn curfew, which has now been reviewed to 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. in response to the attack.

The United States, Britain, ECOWAS, United Nations Secretary-General, among other global leaders have condemned the attempt and called for calm.

The attack is the latest in a series of coups and attempted coups in West Africa in recent years.

Bio was re-elected president in June, a result contested by the main opposition candidate, Samura Kamara.
